Charger fans can breathe a sigh of relief....San Diego's future Hall of Famer and community icon Ladainian Tomlinson has agreed to restructure the final three years of his contract which will keep him playing in San Diego uniform for at least the next two years.
As reported by ESPN.com [link], sources say "Tomlinson won't take a pay cut from his $6.725 million salary in 2009 but the deal was restructured to give the team a cap break in 2009. Tomlinson's cap number in 2009 was scheduled to be $8,791,666." With other Charger stars like Shawne Merriman and Philip Rivers approaching the end of their contracts, the move gives the Chargers some wiggle room under the salary cap.
Tomlinson said, "I love San Diego and being a part of this team with my teammates. My No. 1 priority was to stay here in San Diego. I truly believe this is the place that gives me the best chance to be successful and win a championship. I want to finish the job we started when I got here eight years ago. My heart has always been in San Diego. I couldn't imagine putting on another uniform."
Neither can the San Diego faithful.
